BACKGROUNDER

7th Annual Philanthropy Awards Ceremony Recipients

Outstanding Philanthropist: Steven Baldwin

Stephen Baldwin exemplifies the meaning of the word ‘philanthropy’. Having witnessed

first-hand the effects diabetes has had on members of his own family, Steven is

committed to ending this all too common disease. Nominator Catherine Reynolds of

the Canadian Diabetes Association says: “for the past five years, as a generous donor

and diabetes awareness champion, Steven, is helping researchers in the quest to cure

diabetes”. Steven quietly leads others to get involved, motivating those around him to

become philanthropic. Steven has encouraged family and friends to seek out ways to

support Canadian Diabetes, directing gifts in lieu of Christmas presents. His daughter

Helene spent her summer as a fundraising assistant for the Diabetes Association.

Nomination: Steven Baldwin is a donor and diabetes champion with the Canadian

Diabetes Association (CDA). Steven has given CDA direct financial support for more

than five years which has helped researchers in the quest to find a cure for diabetes. In

addition to this support, Steven’s family has directed gifts to CDA in lieu of Christmas

presents for family members. Steven and his family are strongly

committed to finding a cure for diabetes which directly impacts their family.

Outstanding Youth Fundraiser: Eva Hogan

As a young adult, Eva Hogan is not only a fundraiser but also a mentor. Throughout her

life, being a true fundraiser at heart, Eva has spent countless hours on the phone and

going door to door to see how many people soliciting support for her worthy causes.

For the last ten years, Eva has been a member of the Kingston Y Penguins Aquatic

Club, a team for children with physical disabilities and their able-bodied siblings. Eva

joined the club as a non-swimmer but over time, Eva began getting in the water herself.

By focusing on her abilities and possibilities, Eva became a sensational competitive

swimmer, even setting a Canadian record in the 50 meter breaststroke!

Eva often gives inspirational presentations to share the value of the Kingston Y Penguins

Aquatic Club, and inspires young people with physical disabilities like herself to try their

hardest and overcome their obstacles.

Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser: Gillian Sadinsky

Gillian Sadinsky has been a key volunteer for United Way serving KFL&A for the past 12

years. Gillian lead two very successful campaigns, as Chair in 2000 and again in 2004.

Gillian was the driving force behind the establishment of the Leadership Giving program.

As true leader, Gillian has been instrumental in growing the Leadership Program from

a base of 99 to a community of over 500. This major undertaking created a Leadership

Giving program that, today, is one of the fastest growing sections of United Way’s annual

campaign. Keeping in mind the importance of thanking donors promptly, Gillian also

recruits and coordinates a group of volunteers specifically for this role. In addition to her

substantial annual campaign volunteer role, Gillian played a critical role in the launch of

the United Way KFL&A Success by Six initiative and in the design of their fundraising and

communications plan.

Outstanding Corporation: Smylie’s Your Independent Grocer

John and Angela Smylie, owners of Symlie’s Your Independent Grocer, are philanthropic

leaders in their community of Trenton. Their dedicated support to the annual golf

tournament, gala, Radiothon, and annual half-marathon has ensured success in

generating revenue for the Trenton Memorial Hospital. They also support the Military

Family Resource Centre, the Rotary Club of Trenton and many other charitable

organizations in their community.. Every year, they organize the annual fall Lobster Fest

event in support of local charities. It would be no surprise to see them in their travelling “burger-mobile” at local events donating their time and service to a charity in need.
